Browser Extension

Start and stop your timer from any tab. Works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox.

Installation

The extension isn't in the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons yet. Until it is, install the packaged build (tracking-tabs-extension.zip, from your administrator or the repository's "Build Extension" CI artifact).

Chrome and Edge

  1. Unzip tracking-tabs-extension.zip into a folder you'll keep (it contains manifest.json).
  2. Open chrome://extensions (Edge: edge://extensions) and turn on Developer mode.
  3. Click Load unpacked and choose that folder.
  4. Pin the Tracking Tabs icon to the toolbar.

Firefox (121 or later)

  1. Open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox.
  2. Click Load Temporary Add-on and pick the zip (or manifest.json in the unzipped folder).
  3. Temporary add-ons are removed when Firefox restarts; a permanent install needs the signed store version.

Connect your account

  1. In the app, open Settings → API Tokens, create a token named e.g. Browser extension, and copy it (it starts with tta_ and is shown once).
  2. Click the extension icon, then Open Settings.
  3. Paste the token. Leave App URL as https://app.trackingtabs.com unless your company runs its own deployment (it must be https://).
  4. Click Test connection, then Save.

The token is kept in the extension's local storage on this device (not synced) and is only sent to the app URL. The extension needs a Solo, Team or Business plan, like the API.

Using it

  • Start: click the icon, describe the work, pick a project if you like, and press Start or Enter. A timer already running in your workspace is stopped first.
  • Stop: click Stop. The entry is saved right away.
  • Badge: a green dot means a timer is running; a red ! means the token stopped working. The badge refreshes every minute and whenever you use the popup.
  • Smart Track (optional): turn it on in Settings to get a one-click suggestion when you open Jira, Linear, GitHub or Notion. Off by default.

Troubleshooting

“Your API token is invalid, expired or revoked”
Create a new token in Settings → API Tokens and paste it into the extension settings.
“API access needs a paid plan”
Upgrade the workspace to Solo, Team or Business.
“Can't reach …”
Check the App URL (including https://) and your network or VPN.
“A timer is running in another workspace”
You have a timer running in a different workspace; stop it there first.

Building from source

cd extension
pnpm install
pnpm build # extension/dist/
pnpm build:zip # extension/tracking-tabs-extension.zip

The .github/workflows/extension.yml workflow builds it on every push to main and uploads the zip as an artifact. Icons are rendered from extension/icons/icon.svg to the committed PNGs.
